Merlin is Chamberlain's Australian opener brand and it covers both main door types. The Commander Elite MS105MYQ drives sectional and tilt doors. The SilentDrive Elite MR855MYQ drives roller doors. Both are quiet DC motors, both are myQ capable, and both carry a 7 year warranty when a certified technician installs and services them.
Merlin Commander Elite MS105MYQ, for sectional and tilt doors
The Commander Elite is the motor we fit to most sectional and panel lift doors. It runs a 24 volt DC motor on a belt driven C rail, which is what keeps it quiet enough to sit under a bedroom or above a living area without waking the house.
It handles doors up to 20 square metres and 150 kilograms, so a double sectional door is well within range. Soft start and soft stop take the jolt out of every cycle, automatic force sensing adjusts the pull as the door ages and the weather changes, and the automatic safety reverse stops and returns the door if something is in the way. Security plus 2.0 sends a new rolling code with every press of the remote, so the signal cannot be copied or replayed. It needs only 30 millimetres of headroom, which matters in the low clearance garages common in older Southern Highlands homes.
Merlin SilentDrive Elite MR855MYQ, for roller doors
The SilentDrive Elite is the roller door equivalent, and the name is earned. It is built for heavier roller doors up to 120 kilograms and 18 square metres, and the DC motor keeps noise and vibration down on doors that are usually the loudest thing in the house.
It ships with two premium remotes and a wireless wall button, and the transmitter range is around 18 per cent better than the previous generation, which makes a real difference on longer driveways. We fit it regularly to B&D Rollamaster and Gliderol roller doors, including three door shed installs where all three motors run off the one setup.
The 7 year Merlin warranty, and how to keep it
Merlin's 7 year warranty is not automatic, and this is the part most people miss. It applies when the opener is installed by an authorised garage door technician, and when the door is serviced by a certified technician within the first 12 months and every 24 months after that. A DIY install drops the cover to 1 year.
The cover runs for 84 months or 15,000 cycles, whichever comes first. We are both the installer and the service agent, so a Merlin fitted by us starts on the full 7 year term and stays there for as long as the service intervals are kept. We will let you know when yours is due.
Merlin repairs and servicing
We repair and service all Merlin openers, including older units well out of warranty. Common jobs we are called out for:
Door reverses partway or will not close fully
Motor runs but the door does not move
Remotes have stopped working or need reprogramming
Wall button or wireless wall button not responding
Safety beams misaligned or faulty
Door is noisy, jerky or shuddering through the travel
If the opener is still running but not the way it used to, it is usually a sensor, a limit setting or a worn door component rather than the motor itself. We diagnose before we quote a replacement.
Merlin or B&D, which opener suits your garage?
Both are strong choices and we install and service both, so we have no reason to push one over the other. In practice the decision comes down to three things.
Noise matters most when the garage sits under or beside a living space. Merlin's DC belt drive is the quieter of the two on sectional doors, which is why it is our default on new builds where the garage adjoins a bedroom.
Existing hardware matters next. If you already have a B&D door with B&D remotes and accessories through the house, staying in the family can be the simpler and cheaper path.
